From an image I made of the author last evening @ a Chicago Tribune event @ the Harold Washington library. During her discussion with Julia Keller, Oates displayed quite a forlorn look as she discussed her latest offering, "A Widow's Story". The illustration is from a cropped section of an image, with several PS enhancements including sharpening/filters/saturation adjustments among others.

I converted this from a color image I made @ an event this weekend @ the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago. I isolated this musician from a trio playing some background music outside of the grand ballroom. The wall directly behind the sax player was white, and the rest of the room had light gold walls. I've attempted to mimic an old "Kool" cigarette ad with the B/W and high contrast feel.

Alice Cooper at the Tribune Tower in Chicago.

It was simply an opportunity I didn't want to miss. I was shooting around a video which was being made @ the Tribune Tower. With a break in the action, I took the liberty of asking Alice Cooper if he'd stand over me as I made some images with the building's buttresses around him. He was quite generous and posed over me as I laid down on the deck of the 25th floor walkway at the base of those buttresses. The image ws eventually used to promote the Halloween video WGN AMerica was creating.

A few images from the annual camp/burn in Effingham, IL. We realized that we're coming up on our 20th year next time round. A group of Chicago Tribune employees, and friends began this yearly ritual to blow off some steam - which has elevated to blow'in up much more than that, hence the outing now on private property since the state parks in Illinois and Wisconsin have us on a list (kidding).

Many thanks to Bryan, Kay and Don for their hospitality, and our sincere apologies to their neighbors and livestock.

Off Camera flash in a big space

Location shoot @ Midway Airport in Chicago, worked around a video crew to make stills for a cable television show. Group and individual pics in a near empty hangar - gelled a few flashes to add a bit of color to a dark background. A total of five flashes used on stands, three in the background @ 1/4 power were gelled w/blue, two in the foreground @ 1/2 power were diffused with Sto-Fen Omni-bounce diffusers next to the video lights to mimic their set up. Flashes were triggered with four Pocket Wizard plus units and one Wein peanut optical slave trigger, (ran out of PW's). The most difficult part of the shoot was pushing the other planes out of the way onto the runway... just kidding.

From sublime rhythms and soft touches to scorching distortion filled leads, "Johnny A" created an vast array of sounds and feelings this Monday evening @ Space in Evanston. A nod to, and with hints of Jimi Hendrix in his play, to a bit of Nashville twang, "Johnny A" along with bandmates, Ron Stewart on drums and Jesse Bastos on electric bass played a two hour show which included covers of Hendrix, the Beatles and Stones along with original works. Driving home from a visit to Galena, IL we happened across this ultralight aircraft over U.S. Route 20, near Elizabeth, IL. Not to be deterred with missing a photo op as I was driving, my lovely bride takes the wheel as we careen through the hills of Northwestern Illinois @ 70 miles an hour on a two lane road. I grab my camera - with my foot still on the accelerator and make a few images before entering a construction zone.

Heading out to the Tribune Tower to shoot some advertising images for one of the Trib's clients. I need to mimic some video they're producing, so I either shoot available light w/the video HMI set up or bring strobes..., I'll likely do both.
